Open the Automap and Record Unfinished Routes
Press M to open Underkeep's automap, then use personal notes or markers to record suspicious walls, missing keys, and unfinished routes. Automapping is enabled by default, so your notes can focus on why a place is worth revisiting.
Read the Features Already on Your Map
The automap identifies doors, treasures, statues, pressure plates, pits, rocks, shrines, portals, and passages. Use those features as landmarks when finding an unfinished branch again. A useful personal note adds the reason to return, such as a missing key or a suspicious wall you want to examine.
Turn an Unfinished Route Into a Return Plan
- Press M to open the automap and locate the passage or feature you want to remember.
- Add a personal note or marker for the unfinished route so you can find its location again.
- Record the missing key, required tool, or suspicious feature in your note to give the return visit a clear purpose.
- Touch a discovered portal stone to activate it and shorten later journeys through the fast-travel network.
- Revisit the marked obstruction after obtaining its required key or tool so you can continue the abandoned route.
Early Checkpoints and Reasons to Return
These checkpoints follow the early route through Fangroot Forest, Hollowgrave Tunnels, Underkeep Village, and the cemetery to the Mausoleum and Source Gate. Use the connections to find the branch you meant to revisit. Keep a local marker on the particular gate, pickup, or puzzle so your return has a clear goal.

| Mausoleum and Source Gate | The cemetery, cleric chambers, and deeper Source. | Return with all three Golden Keys and finish the objective. |
Activate Portal Stones Before Moving On
Touch each portal stone you discover to activate it. The fast-travel network can shorten later returns to marked locks, chests, and passages. Before leaving, add a note about the obstacle you want to revisit so the easier journey leads to a useful destination.
Label Routes by the Tool or Key They Need
- Pickaxe or Reinforced Pickaxe: record which tool the obstruction requires so your return note distinguishes their uses.
- Shovel: note the pickup in Underkeep Village and the marked graves you want to dig in Underkeep Cemetery.
- Lockpicking tools: mark an obstruction that calls for them so you can return when you have the required tools.
- Golden Chisel: keep a return marker at an obstruction that requires this tool, with its requirement written into the note.
- Silver Key: mark the northwestern Hollowgrave silver door and return after collecting the key from the chieftain's chest in the Southern Orc Fortress.
