Make Potions With the Mortar and Pestle

To make potions in Underkeep, open the Mortar and Pestle interface, place the ingredients required by a recipe into the crafting combination, and select Craft. Incorrect combinations fail without consuming your ingredients.

02

Gather Recipes and Alchemy Ingredients

Collect mushrooms, flowers, berries, and monster parts while exploring, and keep the alchemy recipes you find. Those recipes teach combinations you can use with the Mortar and Pestle. When you want a particular potion, follow its recipe rather than treating every ingredient from the same category as interchangeable.

03

Craft a Potion From a Recipe

  1. Collect an alchemy recipe to give yourself a combination to follow.
  2. Gather the ingredients named in that recipe so you have the materials for your chosen potion.
  3. Open the Mortar and Pestle interface to access the crafting combination.
  4. Place the required materials into the combination so it matches the recipe you want to make.
  5. Select Craft to attempt the combination and produce the potion when the recipe is correct.
04

Correct a Failed Combination

If crafting fails, compare the materials you selected with the recipe and try again. Failed combinations leave the ingredients intact, so an unsuccessful experiment does not waste those materials. Use a recipe you have found when you want a dependable starting point for your next attempt.

05

Choose Useful Potions to Prepare

Useful potion results include Healing, Mana, Stamina, Cure Poison, Frostvein, Thunderwake, and Mindwell. Let the recipes and ingredients you have collected guide what you prepare. Prioritize a recipe that addresses your party's immediate needs before spending time experimenting with other combinations.

06

Use a Potion Before the Hero Attacks

  1. Check whether the hero needs resources restored or an urgent status condition addressed before attacking.
  2. Use a suitable prepared potion from inventory as a free action during the combat round.
  3. Make the hero's attack after using the potion, taking advantage of the recovery before committing the attack.
07

Decide Between Potions and Rest

Prefer resting when enemies are sufficiently far away and you have spare food. Rely on prepared potions when resting is blocked or the party is under immediate pressure. Disease can undermine recovery from rest, so take that condition into account when deciding how to recover.
